La Roma Pocketbook

A neighborhood tour pocketbook for the ages.

The neighborhood of “La Roma Norte” in Mexico City was developed in the first decades of the 20th century and has been a multicultural enclave since its inception. The highly varied architectural styles of La Roma exemplify Belle Époque, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Neocolonial architecture. The large boulevards and squares of the area encourage casual encounters between neighbors and visitors. In addition to its buildings, La Roma is characterized by the world-renowned characters who inhabited these blocks, including Fidel Castro, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs.

The goal of this project was to capture the essence of the neighborhood in an interactive, bilingual “tour pocketbook.” The pocketbook is a guide to the neighborhood’s primary attractions and stories, and encourages readers to record their own observations as they explore the area.
